Stage 0 treatment - anal cancer

The stage of your cancer helps your doctor to decide what treatment you need. Treatment also depends on:

  • your type of cancer (the type of cells the cancer started in)
  • where the cancer is in your anus
  • other health conditions

If you have low grade AIN (AIN 1 or AIN 2) you might not need treatment. The abnormal cells may go back to normal without treatment. Your doctor will arrange regular checks to monitor your AIN.

If you have high grade AIN (AIN 3) you will need treatment because the abnormal cells are less likely to get better on their own. Doctors usually use surgery to remove some of the skin around the anus. Research has looked at other treatments, such as lasers to destroy the cells (laser ablation) and skin ointment (imiquimod).
