Our impact

Cancer survivor Rob Gambi illustrates the impact personalised medicine could have on cancer patients and their families:

“My first encounter with cancer happened when I was just six years old when my uncle died of this disease. I was too young to understand but I absorbed the extreme sadness and the sense of loss.

28 years later, I experienced cancer myself. I was fit, immersed in my career, and the diagnosis really shocked me.”

Rob’s strength and inner resolve helped him through his treatment and he appeared to make a good recovery. When Rob met his wife Jo he told her about his cancer. But nothing could prepare them for the cancer coming back.

“This time I was angry, in denial – but I had Jo by my side. So again I turned my mind to the treatment plan. My second experience of cancer really told me I had to grab hold of life. So I am very happy to support Cancer Research UK’s Catalyst Club, which holds so much promise for cancer patients and their families.

The idea that treatment could be more tailored and targeted to each individual’s specific cancer and therefore result in higher survival rates with less physically debilitating “collateral damage” is truly exciting.

The Catalyst Club could create a legacy of tailored and successful treatments for not only us, but for future generations. I hope you decide to be part of this inspiring venture.”
