Why we need you:
Cancer Research UK is seeking a committed individual to lead the recruitment and retention of Teams and drive the team fundraising for their community’s Relay For Life.
Cancer Research UK Relay For Life is a celebration of the communities fight against cancer as the teams fundraise in the months leading up to the event.
Each Relay is an overnight, community-led, non-athletic event where teams set up camp and take it in turns to walk around a track for up to 24 hours to signify that ‘cancer never sleeps’. Everyone is invited to come along and celebrate the lives of Cancer Survivors, remember those lost to the disease and show their support of Cancer Research UK's vital work and the day itself has a carnival atmosphere
There would be no Relay For Life without teams or team fundraising. Your recruitment of teams is therefore vital and the relationships you build with Team Captains ensure that Relay is successful year after year. A lively person is needed to inspire Teams to form and take part in Relay and to help Team Captains encourage their Teams to raise as much money as possible to help beat cancer.
What will I be doing?
- Actively working with others to recruit Teams from the Community prior to the Relay event in addition to co-ordinating all recruitment activity. This recruitment may include face to face meetings, oral presentations, telephone calls and letter writing.
- Encouraging and supporting and recognising all Committee Members in recruiting teams.
- Ensuring all Teams are registered for the Relay and have everything they need to raise funds and prepare for the Relay. Regular communications is part of this activity.
- Planning and holding regular Team Captains’ Meetings and a Bank Night with the Accounting Chair.
- Working with other Lead Chairs to plan activity for teams on the day and co-ordinate On the Day Fundraising activity by teams.
- Communicating with, recognising and nurturing Team Captains before, during and after the event to ensure they return year on year
What skills do I need?
- You need to have a positive approach and be comfortable speaking in public
- You need to be resourceful and imaginative in where and how you recruit.
- You should be persuasive and enthusiastic about Relay For Life, in order to inspire others and convert ‘interested’ teams to ‘registered’
- You should have good organisational skills.
- You should have the ability to motivate others – supporting and encouraging their efforts.
How much time do I need to commit?
You will be expected to attend a Team Chair training day. As Team Chair you will also be asked to start actively recruiting Team Captains as soon as you can prior to the Relay and keep them engaged and motivated using regular communication. Attendance at all Relay For Life Committee meetings will be expected (these will probably be monthly and then weekly as the Relay approaches) and also attendance for the duration of the event. You will need to respond ad hoc to enquiries from Team Captains about their role in the Relay and arrange follow-up activities after the Relay with them.
What support will I be given?
You will receive training on Team Development. Although you will be leading on the recruitment of Teams Captains and participants, it is also the responsibility of every other Committee Member to recruit Teams – from the Event Chair to Logistics Chair. As well as this help from your fellow committee members you’ll also have materials and resources at your disposal.

You will play a major part in bringing your community together to unite against cancer and the money raised will help Cancer Research UK beat cancer which can be extremely rewarding. The Relay itself is fun and a great way to meet people and make friends with people in your community
Where will I be based?
This role, more than almost any other on the Relay For Life Committee, will get you ‘out and about’ within your community. Some of the work involved in Team Recruitment can be done from home, e.g. via email, by writing letters/newsletters and phoning potential Team Captains. However, you can’t underestimate the importance of meeting prospective Team Captains face-to-face and being able to explain the event to them in person and in that way inspiring them to become involved with Relay.
