Challenge:

Your choice of a 1k or 500m swim with obstacles

We are combining two of our favourite things – open water swimming and obstacle courses – to bring you a brand new, exciting challenge. Floating obstacles over a 500m or 1km open water course.

This is an open water swimming event in a lake, and will take place in deep water.

Obstacle Swim is suitable for beginner open water swimmers and you will be able to get out of the water at some obstacles, but you must be comfortable swimming the whole of your chosen distance without stopping:

  • 500m is 20 lengths of a standard 25m swimming pool
  • 1km is 40 lengths

Swimmers will start in small groups so that you’ll have plenty of room to swim and take on obstacles at your own pace.

There will be life guards and safety marshalls on obstacles and in boats covering the whole of the swimming course, but some experience of open water swimming would be beneficial. We recommend that you do some training in open water before the event. There are lots of tips on how and where to get started on the Swim England website.

There will be approximately 8 obstacles around the 1km course and 6 on the 500m course, including smaller inflatables to swim over and under and some larger floating obstacles which you will need to climb out of the water to tackle.

All of the obstacles have been designed to be taken on in wetsuits and bare feet.

Each obstacle will have safety trained marshals to guide you over them, and you’ll receive a full briefing before you set off.

You will be able to swim around any obstacles which you don’t feel comfortable taking on.

Stanborough Park Water Sports Centre is a purpose built water activity venue. The lake is used for swimming events and classes throughout the summer, with the water maintained to ensure cleanliness.

There will be changing rooms and warm showers, as well as bag storage, available on event day. There is also a viewing point and cafe for spectators so bring your family and friends along for moral support.

Parking is available but charges apply on the day.

How to find us:

The start point will be on the South Lake, close to the Terranova Restaurant, and can be accessed from Stanborough Lane. Please follow the road signage rather than your sat nav to make sure you find the correct entrance.

There will be changing rooms and bag storage available for your dry clothes and towel while you swim.

Wetsuits will be compulsory on the day and we recommend that you practice swimming in your wetsuit before the event.

If you don't have your own wetsuit, you can hire one at a discounted rate from our official wetsuit partner Hireawetsuit. You'll recieve a discount code by email when you sign up for Obstacle Swim. They will send the wetsuit to you in advance and we recommend training in it before your event. They'll also be on hand at the venue to support on the day.

You should bring your own goggles.

For safety, you will be provided with a swimming cap, wristband and tracking chip. These will be handed out on the day and you must wear them to take part.

For your safety and that of other swimmers, please do not bring:

  • Any floatation or artificial swimming aid such as flippers, paddles or snorkels
  • Headphones or personal audio equipment
  • Any item that could potentially inhibit the flow or safety of other participants or yourself, for example fancy dress items

Before you take part, you should be comfortable completing your chosen distance without stopping, and we recommend practicing in open water and in your wetsuit before event day.

  • 500m is 20 lengths of a standard 25m swimming pool
  • 1km is 40 lengths

A full safety briefing will be provided on the day so that you’ll know how to tackle each obstacle and what to do if you have any difficulties.

The whole course is supervised by trained lifeguards on the obstacles and in boats around the course.

Swimmers will start in small groups so that you’ll have plenty of room to swim and take on obstacles at your own pace.
