Liverpool Cancer Trials Unit Programme GrantFunding period: 01 February 2009 to 30 September 2013
Clinical and Translational Research Committee - Clinical Trials Unit - Programme Award
Funding committee: Clinical Trials Awards and Advisory Committee
Background to the proposal: The LCTU commenced with Core Programme Funding in August 2006 with a pre-eminent track record in pancreatic cancer trials. This is a difficult area to work in yet this is a cancer with a medium-level incidence and high lethality. The LCTU has now developed policies and procedures to maintain all trials to ICH GCP standards and proposes and expansion into other tumour types where Liverpool can make particular contributions. Relevance to cancer: The LCTU will play a key role in expanding the number of new cancer agents going into the clinical arena by identifying clinically active agents and performing pivotal phase III trials. Specific aims of the research: Enhance capacity that delivers high quality clinical cancer trials and undertake translational and statistical research with the objective of changing clinical practice. Outline plan of research: The new trials portfolio will include phase I/II and phase III trials in Head and Neck, Gynaecological, Lung and Pancreatic Cancers as well as Haematological Malignancies, Lymphomas, Melanoma and Psychosocial Oncology and be linked into translational research. We shall undertake systematic reviews with meta-analysis to inform trial planning and methodological statistical research to improve the design and interpretation of clinical trials.
