Cancer Research UK supporter, Richard Armour is passionate about running

The stories of people who support Cancer Research UK are often courageous and inspirational. Here are just two examples of real-life experiences.

Richard Armour

Richard, a member of the Cancer Research UK Triathlon Team, has taken part in an incredible 15 triathlons since 2001 and has raised over £14,000 for research into cancer.

Having lost his father to the disease, he says that taking part in so many triathlons is a great way of getting through the grieving process.

"I decided on a crazy sport like triathlon and I'm so glad I did... I think of Dad often whilst I'm doing the race, but the support I get is wonderful... I just wish he could be here to support and cheer me on."

Tracey Barraclough

Tracey took part in her first Great North Run in 2003 having taken part in three Race for Life events.

Tracey lost her mother, grandmother and great grandmother to ovarian cancer.

Thanks to research into the genetic risks of cancer, she discovered that she had an 85 per cent lifetime risk of developing breast or ovarian cancer. She then took the difficult decision to have a hysterectomy, have her ovaries removed and have a double mastectomy.

"I wanted to stop the chain that was going through my family... I wasn't going to just sit back and wait for the cancer to come."

"I loved taking part in the Great North Run. Raising money for Cancer Research UK was so important and seeing all the other Cancer Research UK runners in their turquoise shirts gave a great sense of camaraderie."
