Top tips for the big day
Following the advice below will help take the stress out of your race day.Be organised
- Take the race start time and work backwards. Allow yourself at least an hour at the start to get used to the surroundings.
- Work out your travel plans. However long you think it will take, leave a bit more time on top to allow for unforeseen problems (plus your extra hour before the start of the race). Traffic will be probably be heavy near the race location.
- Pack your kit the day before the race and fix your race number on your top.
- Go to bed early the night before and make sure you get up early. Use two alarm clocks – leave nothing to chance.
- You should eat a big meal of carbohydrates the night before. Eat something on race morning, but not in excess – tea and toast should be sufficient for breakfast.
On the day
- Needless to say, make as many visits as you can to the conveniences before the race, even if it's for psychological reasons. If you are driving to the event, try and get someone to take you so you can free your mind to concentrate on the race.
- Make sure you take something with you to keep warm at the start – like the Cancer Research UK running sack which you should have received in your fundraising pack.
- Warm up for 15 to 20 minutes before the start with a combination of muscle stretching and gentle running. Don't overdo it though!
- Finally, relax and enjoy the race!
