Welcome Relay For Life Jarrow Welcome to Relay For Life Jarrow. This is our third Relay and we're so excited to be part of such an emotional, unforgettable experience again.

If you want to enter a team, entertain us, sponsor us or be with us on the day, we'd love to hear from you. Remember you don't have to be able to run to be involved, you don't have to stay up all night, you don't have to like camping! It's all about giving up just one day and night for those who may not be able to. Everyone can contribute something to Relay For Life and you will get even more back. Ask anyone who was there last year. I became involved in fundraising for cancer charities when Sue Wright, a very close friend of mine, died of ovarian cancer. I had hoped that my Dad would be around to see our Relay but he died of lung cancer in April 2007. Unfortunately my mam was diagnosed with bowel cancer last year and my younger sister was diagnosed with breat cancer a few months later. Both have had treatment and are doing well. Sue and my family are my inspiration for chairing Relay 2009. We will be remembering them and all affected by cancer when we light the candles at our Candle of Hope ceremony.
What is Relay Relay For Life is a unique fundraising event. It gives your community the chance to celebrate the lives of those touched by cancer and to raise money to bring hope for the future.

Fundraising before the day Last year's Relay was a fantastic success and an experience which will never be forgotten. We exceeded our £40000 target and doubled the amount raised the previous year. We had 42 teams, 30 survivors and 770 candles. In 2009 we want MORE!
Our theme is ANYTHING AMERICAN as it is Independence Day- prize for the best themed tent.
March 6th- race night at the Greyhound Stadium - over 200 people attended last year - get your tickets now!

On the day

Survivors lap of honour

We would like as many Survivors as possible to come along as our VIPs to start off our Relay. By participating in the Lap of Honour they are proving that TOGETHER WE ARE BEATING CANCER and can give hope to those who have been diagnosed with this awful disease.

Candle of Hope

The sight of over 700 candles lit around the track was one we will never forget. 3 pipers played as we walked the track Reverend Ken Smith spoke of love, hope and light at the end of the tunnel. Jade Thirwell(aged 16) sang Amazing Grace acapella and the bugler's Last Post, was one of the most emotional experiences many of us will ever have.

Entertainment and activities

Have a go on our now famous slippery slide, Grand National event and maggot race. We also have some exciting American themed entertainment lined up. All for free -all you have to do is turn up on July 4th - go on, you'll love it!!
