Fundraising advice

A tug of war in action

The main thing to remember when fundraising is... have fun! Because your fundraising is all for a very good cause, you'll find that you'll get enormous support from friends and family.

Here are a few tips to keep your Relay fundraising on track:

  • Set a fundraising goal – decide how much money you think you can raise, and add £100! Let all your friends and family know about your target and ask them to help you beat it.

  • Make sure that at the start of your fundraising you set up an online fundraising page – this is one of best ways you can raise money, and it's certainly the easiest.

  • Start fundraising as soon as you form your team. Fundraising for Relay For Life takes place right up to and during the event itself.

  • Check out our fundraising toolkit for materials and resources that will help you get the most out of your fundraising.

  • Brainstorm – work with your team members and your Relay Committee to come up with good fundraising ideas.

  • Hold fun events and get everyone involved! Get as much publicity for them as you can by making a list of local newspapers, magazines and websites, and sending them information about your events.

  • Keep in touch with your Relay Committee for ways to promote your events.

  • Many organisations will match your fundraising pound for pound, and they can claim a tax break by doing so. So why not approach your employers and see if they can help?

  • Phone and email as many of your friends as possible, asking them to support your fundraising and dedicate a Candle of Hope.

  • Make sure you keep people up to date with your progress, and always make sure you thank them for their contribution, let them know what's happening throughout the year.

Remember, the money you raise can make a big difference to the lives of many people affected by cancer. Find out more about where your money goes.
