Between 2003 and 2011 Cancer Research UK ran the SunSmart campaign, funded by the UK Health Departments. The SunSmart campaign incorporated research, public communication, working with professionals and policy development to address the burden of skin cancer in the UK.

We now work in partnership to deliver campaigns to help people enjoy the sun safely.

Since 2011 we have been working in partnership with NIVEA Sun to encourage people to enjoy the sun safely when they are out and about.

Over the past ten years Cancer Research UK has commissioned the Office for National Statistics (ONS) to carry out sun protection surveys. The surveys are designed to measure:

  • Knowledge about skin cancer prevention measures
  • Self-reported sun protection behaviour
  • We use ONS research to monitor the campaign's impact and effectiveness
