Increasing the reach of our network to accelerate progress

We want to foster a dynamic and responsive research environment that supports global networks and shares expertise and resources. After two successful funding calls, we are now opening up applications for our Accelerator Award to institutions across Spain and Italy

We are delighted to announce a new funding partnership with the Fundación Científica de la Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer (FC AECC, the principal cancer research charity in Spain) and the Associazione Italiana per la Ricerca sul Cancro (AIRC, the principal cancer research charity in Italy) which will support our ambition to accelerate translational research at our Centres and increase the reach of our network.

The FC AECC and AIRC will provide around £10 million in additional funding to support collaborations across our network and with institutions in Spain and Italy. This partnership will capitalise on shared priorities across our research communities and will support our ambition to drive progress in translational research by building outstanding global networks.

The Awards will support development of high quality resources – including training programmes – that could not be created in isolation, bringing together the best teams and resources to accelerate progress. The award has already funded collaborations that are tackling brain tumours, building new understanding of immunotherapy and revealing the evolution of cancer through post-mortem tissue collection.

Iain Foulkes, Executive Director Research & Innovation, Cancer Research UK said:

This exciting new partnership offers a simple mechanism to help researchers and clinicians throughout the world to collaborate more closely on large-scale translational research projects. There is a huge amount of outstanding research being carried out across Spain, Italy and the UK and we hope this new initiative will help us all make the most of resources, people and time, so we can deliver the greatest impact for patients with cancer.

Isabel Orbe Martinez-Avial, Managing Director FC AECC said:

The FC AECC is committed to fund high quality research oriented to improve patients’ quality of life. Having the opportunity to collaborate with other international cancer research charities will help create new research international networks and accelerate obtaining key results to fight against cancer.

Lisa Vozza, Chief Scientific Officer AIRC said:

AIRC’s mission is to understand, prevent and cure cancer through research and outreach activities. We aim to find solutions to the cancer problem awarding grants to the most meritorious projects in Italy and training fellowships. We are collaborating with other international cancer research charities and organizations to accelerate the achievement of our mission goals.
