Dr Naim Dangoor

Dr Naim Dangoor CBE has donated £1.1 million to support the Cancers in General section on CancerHelp UK for a 5 year period, in honour of his late wife Renée Dangoor. Renée sadly died from breast cancer in 2008. Now the head of a hugely successful property portfolio, the 95-year-old Jewish Iraqi originally came to London to study engineering 75 years ago. After building a successful business empire in his homeland, Dr Dangoor and his wife Renée – crowned Miss Baghdad in 1948 – were forced to flee in the 1960s due to anti-Semitic persecution and returned to the UK with nothing.

Since then, Dr Dangoor and his family have made numerous charitable donations as a way of thanking the country that gave Dr Dangoor refuge and he hopes his gift will help Cancer Research UK continue to make a real difference to the lives of people with cancer.

In February 2002, staff at KPMG voted for Cancer Research UK to be their nominated Charity of the Year, specifying that they wanted the money to be used to support CancerHelp UK. That year, they raised a staggering £50,000, which was matched by the firm to make a fantastic total of £100,000. This money was used to support the development of six new sections of the CancerHelp UK website - the pages on leukaemia, myeloma and cancers of the kidney, womb, oesophagus and brain.

Jo Wright, Communications Manager at KPMG says: “CancerHelp UK provides an invaluable service to cancer patients and their families so we were delighted to support it.”

KPMG staff raised the money through the company’s payroll giving scheme, whereby individuals offer to make a set monthly donation out of their pay. The scheme is administered by the company in partnership with the Charities Aid Foundation.

We are delighted to say that our Cancer Research UK corporate fundraising team have won an award for their work with KPMG. The award is from the Professional Fundraising & The Institute of Fundraising Awards 2003 for the category 'Best Use of Payroll Giving'. Our team came first with their campaign 'You Make the Difference (KPMG Staff Selected Charity Fund)'

Current on-going funding

From February 2002, CancerHelp UK has been funded and supported by Cancer Research UK, who now own the site. This organisation was formed in February 2002 from the merger of The Cancer Research Campaign and the Imperial Cancer Research Fund.

Previous funding

From June 2000 to January 2001, CancerHelp UK was funded and supported by The Cancer Research Campaign.

The site was originally funded by the West Midlands Regional Health Authority. This site has also been sponsored by educational grants from AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals, Nycomed Amersham and Roche Pharmaceuticals. These companies did not have any editorial control over the contents of this site, or other websites to which this site has links.

The British Medical Association has funded research through the TP Gunton Award, 1997.

Before June 2000, The Cancer Research Campaign funded both development of and research into the site.

Cancerbackup worked with CancerHelp UK in the initial development of the site in 1995.
