Specialist reviewers guidelines
Thank you for agreeing to review a section of CancerHelp UK for us. Your contribution is essential to us and we are grateful for your time. It is most important that you highlight new developments that have occurred since this section was last reviewed.
Please tick all pages to show you have approved them, whether you make any comments or not. If there are areas you do not feel qualified to comment on, and so cannot approve, please make this clear by writing it on the page.
In your comments, please cover
- The overall tone of the section
- The balance between different treatment sections (eg whether a treatment is overemphasised)
- Omissions
- Inaccuracies
- Outdated information that should be removed
- Developing treatments that we should refer to, including treatments still in trial
- Developing treatments or current issues that have received media or public attention
- Diagrams - check existing ones plus suggestions for additional diagrams (sketches are welcome!)
- Any other information that you think would be helpful to patients: NICE recommendations, treatment or referral guidelines etc
We can send you the pages we would like you to review in hard copy or electronically, as you prefer. Please note, we cannot do both! Both are time consuming in different ways and unfortunately our admin resource is very limited.
This will be accompanied by a set of specific reviewers’ questions, directing you to particular topical issues, together with any draft content not yet up on the site. We are happy for you to write comments directly on the hard copy, in the margins or on the back of relevant pages. Please write legibly! If you choose to comment electronically, please use tracked changes or paste comments next to areas of text you are querying.
Please don't write or re-word text yourself (unless it is unclear). Rough (legible!) notes or bullets will do. We follow a well-established house style that is designed to be as accessible as possible, even to those with a relatively low reading age. In your notes, please give us enough detail to enable us to write the necessary information ourselves. If this is not possible, please give us an idea of where we can find further information. Comments such as 'needs rewriting' or 'add more detail' are insufficient and will inevitably lead to us contacting you again for further explanation.
On completion of their review, all expert reviewers for CancerHelp UK are eligible for a bursary as recompense for their work. This is payable providing the review is conducted to an acceptable standard and returned to us within 6 weeks of receipt. Please contact us (on cancerhelpuk@cancer.org.uk) as early as possible to discuss potentially unavoidable delays.
