Treatment for oligodendroglioma
Surgery is the main treatment for oligodendrogliomas. But often, some tumour is left behind after surgery. If the tumour is slow growing your doctor may recommend that you don't have further treatment straight after the surgery but wait to see if the tumour causes symptoms.
Radiotherapy for oligodendroglioma
If you get symptoms after the surgery or if the surgeon cannot completely remove the tumour you may be advised to have radiotherapy.
Chemotherapy for oligodendroglioma
Chemotherapy tends to work quite well for oligodendrogliomas. You may have it for a high grade (anaplastic) oligodendroglioma. Or before or after radiotherapy for an oligodendroglioma that has come back.
You can view and print the quick guides for all the pages in the treating brain tumours section.
As oligodendrogliomas are often slow growing, you may not have radiotherapy straight after surgery if your tumour has been completely removed. Some specialists prefer to keep radiotherapy in reserve to treat the tumour if it comes back.
You may have radiotherapy straight after surgery to treat
- High grade or anaplastic oligodendrogliomas
- Tumours that cannot be removed
- Tumours that can only be partly removed
Chemotherapy tends to work quite well for oligodendrogliomas. You may have chemotherapy

- After radiotherapy
- To treat an oligodendroglioma that has come back
- To treat high grade (anaplastic) oligodendrogliomas
The most common chemotherapy drug combination for oligodendroglioma is PCV - procarbazine, CCNU (lomustine) and vincristine. You may have carmustine implants for newly diagnosed high grade glioma, if you have had at least 90% of the tumour removed surgically. And doctors have been using temozolomide in trials for oligodendroglioma. There is detailed information about these drugs in the section about chemotherapy for brain tumours.
