Get tested - my cervical cancer story
From Miss Kenny
I was suffering from abnormal bleeding for a month, so I took myself off to the doctors and had a smear test. I then had to go to hospital for a colposcopy and a few weeks later was told I had cervical cancer.
It’s not something I ever really thought I would get! I am only in my 20s. I went through all sorts of feelings... thinking I was going to die, and I felt so bad about leaving my child without a mum. But lucky for me the doctors were confident that I could get rid of my cancer with an operation.
I had to have a radical tracelectomy to remove my cervix, the top of my vagina and part of my womb. It’s been 3 weeks now & the doctors have told me my lymph nodes are clear and they have removed my cancer. So all I have to do now is focus on getting better.
It’s weird to think I have gone in to hospital with cancer and come back out without it. It’s weird to get my head around, but I know how lucky I have been.
I think it’s important to know your body and if you’re ever unsure of anything go to get tested.
