My future after acute myeloid leukaemia (AML)
From Paul Floyd in Belfast
When I was 16 I had just finished my GCSEs. In the summer I went to Spain for my holidays but fell ill. I had a really bad ear infection and when I got back home I was feeling more and more run down. I kept going back and forth to the see the doctor but was told it was nothing to worry about. However, when they did a blood test they saw my blood levels were very low. I has a bone marrow biopsy which discoverd I had acute myeloid leukaemia (AML).
I had my course of treament and was in remission but within a year and a half I relapsed. My only option of surviving was to have more chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant - luckily my mum was a match to donate. I was really scared but stayed positive. I was in hospital for 9 weeks and was really ill. But I got through it and a year and a half later I'm doing very well. I'm now 20 and back at college. I'm not thinking about my illness anymore.
My advice is to keep thinking about your future and always allow a lot of humour to surround you. Plus, relax a lot - it works!
