I just want to share my cancer experience with other people going through the same thing. I want to reassure them that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in December 2005 after going through tests for an underactive thyroid. The only symptom I had was a painless lump on my neck. I had a total thyroidectomy 3 weeks after my diagnosis.
This meant a 3 day stay in hospital which was possibly the worst part as I had to be away from my 3 children aged 18, 14 and 2. We thought it would be too upsetting for my 2 year old daughter to see me with tubes coming out of my neck and attached to a drip.
In February this year, I had radiotherapy to kill off any remaining cancer cells. I had to stay in isolation in hospital for a week, which meant no visitors or any contact at all. This was very hard, especially as my dear mother had very suddenly passed away 4 weeks before. I had to mourn her death alone which was very hard.
Anyway, so far all the signs of me being completely cured of cancer are very good and, in fact, I have an appointment at Addenbooks Hospital on 6th June to get the results of a recent blood test to tell me if this is the case, so please wish me luck.
