This section lists charitable and professional bodies which provide financial and practical support to cancer patients and their families. Some charities ask that a nurse, doctor or social worker makes the referral. This is to streamline the application process for the charity so that they can arrange your support as quickly and efficiently as possible.
For children with cancer, necessary referrals are made by social workers or nurses at the CCLG (Children's Cancer and Leukaemia Group) children's cancer centres, who are very aware of what is available. But at adult hospitals, social workers may not be aware of every charity who offers help and you may need to suggest an appropriate body yourself.
All of the organisations in this section aim to relieve financial distress for those who are eligible and in need. It is difficult to define 'need' as every case is different. It is always worth contacting the charities directly if you are not sure whether you qualify. Some make an income and expenditure evaluation to assess your level of need. The amount of support offered varies. Some charities can offer help with day to day expenses, and others may make a contribution towards particular costs.
