Is lower bowel bleeding a sign of bowel cancer?

Bleeding from the back passage (rectum) can be a sign of cancer. But it is also a sign of other illnesses. The most common cause of rectal bleeding is piles (haemorrhoids). These are expanded veins in the rectal area and are nothing to do with cancer. Piles usually also cause itching and soreness around the back passage.

It is not possible for you to tell whether bleeding is due to cancer or something less serious. So if you have bleeding, you should go to your GP for a check up.
