Do you have to wean yourself off Megace, or can you just stop taking it?

Generally, if you have been taking Megace for a short while it's okay to stop. Sometimes, if Megace has been taken for a long time, there can be problems if it is stopped suddenly. But it is important that you talk to your doctor first. It is not a good idea to stop taking any prescription drug without discussing it with the doctor who prescribed it for you.

There are very few drugs you have to wean off. The most important are corticosteroids (usually referred to as steroids) – you should never stop taking steroids suddenly because your body needs to get used to making its own again.

Corticosteroids are part of a larger family of drugs referred to as steroids or steroid hormones. Although Megace, or megestrol acetate to give it it's full name, is a steroid hormone treatment, it is okay to stop after short treatments. But it is best to discuss this with your doctor.
