Getting around a page using a keyboard

It's easy to use a web page, and go to the pages it links to, without using a mouse at all. You can even fill in forms on the internet without ever having to pick up a mouse.

Instructions for Windows users

Using your keyboard to get around a web page

  • Decrease text size – "Ctrl" + "-"
  • Increase text size – "Ctrl" + "+"
  • Move to next link/button/form field –"Tab"
  • Move to previous link/button/form field – "Shift" + "Tab"
  • Find text on this page – "Ctrl" + "F"
  • Move down one page – PageDown
  • Move up one page – PageUp
  • Go to bottom of page – End
  • Go to top of page – Home
  • Open a link in a page or press a button ¿– "Enter" or "Return"
  • Open link in a new tab – "Ctrl" + "Enter" or "Return"
  • Open link in a new window – "Shift" + "Enter" or "Return"

Using your keyboard to fill in an online form

  • Use "Tab" to navigate around the form
  • Toggle checkbox – "Spacebar" (i.e. use "Tab" to select the checkbox you want and then use "Spacebar" to tick it or untick it)
  • Select radio button – use "Tab" to get to the first radio button, then use arrow keys to select the one you want
  • Move down through drop-down box options – "Alt" + "down" arrow key
  • Undo – "Ctrl" + "Z"
  • Submit form – many forms let you submit by hitting "Enter" or "Return" at any point in the form. On some you will need to use "Tab" until the submit button is highlighted before hitting "Enter" or "Return"
