Working with Government

Keeping cancer high on the political agenda

Big BenCancer Research UK works with politicians and policy-makers to make sure that cancer stays at the top of the health agenda. We ensure that the views of patients, researchers and health professionals are heard at all levels of government.

Informing the political debate

Our scientists and researchers advise all three national Parliaments in Westminster, Scotland and Wales on health and scientific policy and charity regulation, as well as working in Europe. Our experts provide evidence to Select Committees, All Party Groups and public inquiries and help us frame responses to Department of Health, NICE and other public consultations.

We take every opportunity to meet with Ministers, politicians and civil servants and tell them what we think about important issues and how legislation could be changed for the better.

Our Public Affairs team write detailed briefings for parliamentarians for debates and raise the profile of cancer issues at the political party conferences and other events.

Campaigning for change

We campaign on cancer issues that are important to patients, our researchers, volunteers and supporters.

For example, we were heavily involved in pushing for all workplaces and enclosed public places in the UK to go smokefree, to protect non-smokers and encourage smokers to quit. We worked with other health organisations and encouraged many thousands of supporters to contact their MP and make their voice heard.
