Improving quality of life

A couple having dinnerCancer Research UK is committed to improving the quality of life of cancer patients.

In the mid-1970s, we pioneered research in the UK into the psychological needs of cancer patients, their families and carers.

And our ongoing programme of research is continuing to find new ways of helping cancer patients cope with a cancer diagnosis and live with the disease.

Our research is also providing new guidelines and training for cancer specialists and healthcare professionals.

Highlights in this area:

  • Our researchers in Sheffield have shown that exercise may help women recover their general health after successful treatment for breast cancer. This simple but crucial discovery could benefit thousands of women in future.

  • Depression is a common side effect of cancer and its treatment. Our scientists in Scotland have highlighted this issue and are developing strategies to address the problem.
