Suzanne's story

Suzanne Fernando

Mother-of-two Suzanne Fernando was diagnosed with cervical cancer whilst pregnant with her daughter Aaron. Suzanne noticed something was wrong when she started bleeding sporadically.

She says: "My instincts told me all was not well. Members of my family have been touched by cancer and thoughts about the disease kept nagging away in my mind."

Eight months into her pregnancy, Suzanne underwent an internal examination. Doctors found a large tumour in her cervix.

Suzanne says, "I had a biopsy and had to stay in hospital for the results. That night was awful. I lay awake wondering what was going to happen to us. The next day, the doctors told me I had cancer and wouldn't be able to deliver my baby normally. I was in shock."

Emergency delivery

Suzanne was rushed into theatre for an emergency cesarean section. Shortly after Aaron's delivery, Suzanne started hemorrhaging.

Doctors told her partner Kes to prepare himself for the worst. Suzanne had to have a hysterectomy. Later on she had an intensive course of chemotherapy and radiation treatment. Today Suzanne is cancer free.

Optimistic

She says, "I had ignored the little voice in my head which told me I might have cancer. Today though, I have two beautiful girls and a future.

"I am enjoying life hospital free and with my family by my side."
