Awareness and early diagnosis campaigns and initiatives
We would like a clear commitment to continued funding and support for early diagnosis initiatives such as NAEDI and Be Clear on Cancer beyond 2015.
There are a number of campaigns and initiatives focusing on improving early diagnosis of cancer. Both national and local approaches are important if we are to improve diagnosis of cancer. Of particular importance are the National Awareness and Early Diagnosis Initiative (NAEDI), a public sector/third sector partnership led by NHS England, the Department of Health, Public Health England and Cancer Research UK, and the Be Clear on Cancer campaigns.
Evidence from the national lung, bowel, and kidney and bladder cancer Be Clear on Cancer campaigns shows that they have been effective in changing public and referral behaviour. Recent evaluation of the Be Clear on Cancer national lung campaign, which ran from May to June 2012, showed that over 700 extra cancers were diagnosed during the campaign. Of these, around 300 more people received surgery than in the same months the previous year. Surgery is the best way to improve survival from lung cancer.
NAEDI and Be Clear on Cancer are England-only initiatives, but the Detect Cancer Early (DCE) initiative in Scotland has also run campaigns on bowel screening and breast cancer awareness, with further campaigns planned. We would like to see thought given to the potential for similar initiatives in Wales and Northern Ireland, to help reduce the barriers to early presentation and diagnosis across the UK.
