What we're looking for
Facilitating a major shift in early detection research represents a key strategic driver for Cancer Research UK, and one in which progress will play a key role to accelerate research. Our ambitions are significant, and we are looking for a leader who can take accountability to help us realise this potential.
The Director of Early Detection and Prevention Research will drive research and strategic leadership within CRUK and the research community more widely, to develop research activities and maintain oversight of our early detection, population and behavioural research activities. The role will use their scientific expertise and understanding, to drive our strategy in this space, engage and attract a vibrant research community to answer critical questions in cancer research and deliver a significant increase in research funding to these areas.
Our ambition is to build on the strong foundations of CRUK's population and behavioural research and build a strong nucleus of early detection research within the UK. The opportunity for accelerated progress in understanding early stage disease as well as other contributing factors such as behavioural change could play a transformative roll in increasing survival rates over the next 20 years; however, our current understanding in this space is limited.
There is relatively little research activity in the UK, or indeed globally – largely due to the inherent scientific challenges represented by developing diagnostic tools, and the current focus on later stage disease; however, recent advances in biological understanding, and technological advances, holds significant promise to making future progress. Our ambitions will match this potential, and see us invest tens of millions in the coming years.
We will enable high-quality research by investing in research leadership and infrastructure that will support networking and multidisciplinary, translational research. Such critical mass will not only catalyse research, but also act as a magnet to attract expertise from across the world.
This a fantastic opportunity to lead a key strategic driver which will support CRUK’s overall ambitions and a hugely exciting time to join our world-leading Research Funding team, whose work is at the core of Cancer Research UK’s goals of beating cancer sooner.
