Tests to stage

The stage of a cancer tells you how big it is and how far it has spread. Knowing this helps your doctor decide what treatment you need.

To find out the stage of your cancer you might need one or more tests.

Chest x-ray

CT scan

Internal examination under anaesthetic

IVU (Intravenous urogram) or IVP (IV pyelogram)

What happens when you have an IVU (or IVP) test on your bladder and kidneys to help stage your cancer.

PET-CT scan

A PET-CT scan combines a CT scan and a PET scan into one to give detailed information about your cancer.

Blood tests

Blood tests check your general health. They can also check for proteins called tumour markers, which can be raised in some cancers.
